Statistical Accounts of Scotland

Digitised and searchable versions of the Old Statistical Account and the NEW Statistical Account.

The Statistical Accounts of Scotland Online provides access to digitised and fully searchable versions of both the Old Statistical Account (1791-99) and the New Statistical Account (1834-45). These are parish reports, written by Church of Scotland ministers, which provide insight into various aspects of social history in Scotland including agriculture, working and living conditions, language use and the arts and culture. The materials within the site are some of the most commonly cited materials on Scottish history and culture from these historical periods.

The site features a blog, which provides full discussion of an array of different topics including Gaelic language, agriculture, the arts and Scottish history, with clickable references to the individual records used to create the evidence base for the blog posts.

Use the Statistical Account of Scotland when you want:

  • Information on topics relating to all aspects of Scottish social and agricultural history
  • Access to parish reports on any topic relevant to the above periods of history
